Does this mean I'm Crazy?
It
takes courage and maturity to look for solutions to problems instead of ignoring or hiding them and letting them become worse.
Some people still resist the idea of therapy because they don't fully understand or appreciate it. In the past therapy
was only available to those with the most serious mental health problems, but that is not longer the case. And no, you are
not crazy.
What
can I expect on my first visit?
During your first visit
we will talk a bit about yourself, your background, what brings you to therapy and your expectations.
Will you share my information with my family, physician, school or workplace?
Therapists are bound to respect the privacy of their patients and keep things they are told confidential. A
therapist won't tell anyone else — including parents — about what is discussed in your session unless you
give permission. The only exception is if there is reason to believe a patient may cause harm to self or others. If the issue
of privacy and confidentiality worries you, be sure to ask about it during our first meeting. It's important to feel comfortable
so you can talk openly and freely.
How
do I know if analysis is right for me?
Typically people come to psychoanalysis
to deal with difficulties that have troubled them for many years. Some have had previous therapy and have found that it did
not allow them to fully resolve their difficulties. Others have had no previous treatment, but, recognize that a more intensive
approach is warranted in order to resolve their difficulties.
What will an analysis involve? To heighten awareness, analysands
come four to five times a week, lie on a couch, and attempt to say everything that comes to mind. Although patients are often
surprised by this commitment most find that this intensifies the process and promotes a greater self-awareness.
Will you put me on medication?
In Minnesota, psychologists and clinical social workers cannot prescribe medication. Although many individuals prefer
not to use medication, on occasion it may be helpful. Your therapist may recommend that you consult with a psychiatrist to
determine whether medication would be useful.
How long is a session?
Sessions are based on 45-50 minutes.
Do you accept medical insurance?
Yes, we accept all insurance plans. During your first session you will discuss fees and insurance.
As a courtesy, insurance companies may be billed for you by our Billing Department.
